in paragraph 2 of this letter which was written before

I received the above cablegram. There is very little

current running here even in high floods so the cross

girders being lower than the main girders cannot offer any

obstruction to the flow as the longitudinal girders need

not project as low as the fish-bellied part of the cross

girders.

24. I have to confirm a cablegram sent for a Bruce's

dredger as follows:

meaning

"CRECES HOUDSROEDE BRUCE LINKERARK PLATYOMIDE"

"From Chief Resident Engineer to Consulting

"Engineers sand as soon as possible Bruce's

"grab to be worked by single chain 5 feet dia-

#meter" Mr Barry advised bridge No. 30 to be

put more into the centre of the present river and as

borings showed nothing but sand it becomes necessary to

found the bridge on wells.

25. It was decided to use the 100 foot deck span

set free from bridge 49 with 20 foot spans to take the

slopes. This necessitates eight wells 16 feet in diameter

being sunk probably between 25 and 30 feet into the bed of

the river. As this is urgent work I cabled for a dredger

so as to try and get the work completed before the rainy

season is too close.

26. The dredger with which I sunk the wells of

bridge 25 was only a second hand one and is now quite

worn out and unserviceable. I therefore hope that the

Bruce's dredger is sent out by the time this letter has

arrived.

The dredger I require is similar to those I

used in India for well sinking and is a well known type.

I reported to the Honourable Colonial Secretary

the receipt of 25,088 sleepers ex s.s. "Olive Branch" As

reported previously this steamer had a collision and had
